Beauty and Repulsion

Beauty to me, is something that a person sees as attractive or pleasing to them. Beauty can be seen in a person's actions or as physical beauty. Whatever a person loves or is passionate about they would find beautiful. That can be experienced inside their body like an emotion or outside the body such as a physical appearance of something. For me, as odd as it may be, I am passionate about racing. The picture displayed here is one that I find appealing because of the grace and speed that the car has around the track.

Repulsion is the opposite of what beauty is. Repulsion would mean that whatever is being witnessed makes the viewer feel the need to back up or turn away from it. Something that is not appealing and something that the viewer wouldn't do themselves.

A. Good art would be art that has good asthetics and avoids any major difficulties or scrutiny. An example of good art would be "Manifest Destiny" by Alexis Rockman. 2003-2004. ("Why is That Art?", Terry Barrett, page 33.) Bad art is art that is not considered art or art that can not stand up to close criticism. An example of bad art would be "Untitled", 1995, by Agnes Martin. ("Why is That Art?", Terry Barrett, page 84.

B. Honorific art is art that falls into one or more of four main art theory categories.

C. Classificatory art is art that has been deemed art as when it is compared to something else that is deemed not to be art. Its art by comparisson.

D. There really is not any place in art that I would feel uncomfortable talking about.

E. Monika Malewska. She has a peice that has Godzilla ripping up pillsbury doughboys. It is graphite and looks to be a simple straight foreward peice of work. I think it has beauty in the cuteness and innocence of the doughboys and repulsion in the image of Godzilla killing them.
